© Alexander-DiazThe third edition of the Real Dance Festival is an invitation to actively engage with political and aesthetic realities, but also to glittering escapism: the programme ranges from the opening with A.I. Mby Kyle Abraham, the internationally acclaimed choreographer and dancer from New York, who has already worked with icons such as Beyoncé and Sufjan Stevens, to Hannover's first No Boundaries Battle by Brujas
Collective. As part of the Real Dance Festival and in co-operation with the Brujas Collective, the Cultural Office of the City of Hanover invites you to the City Hall.
In addition to the world premiere of Mediation Reprise, Kyle Abraham will be showing three other outstanding pieces from his repertoire with his company A.I.M., which has been growing for 20 years. Also travelling from New York is Jerron Herman, who will be showing his performance LAX at the Kunstverein Hannover. As „site-responsive choreography“, his exploration of athletic calm - a calm that is less an absence of strength than a disciplined pause - makes reference to the current exhibition Self-Portrait as a Pregnant Woman by Teresa Solar Abboud. The renowned artist Choy Ka Faimit SoftMachine: The Return, who lives between Singapore and Berlin, is a guest at Ballhof 1. His
Work on Soft Machine began ten years ago. As a friend and fellow traveller, he himself is part of the living archive of contemporary Asia. He brings together four choreographers and, together with them, liberates dance from its metaphorical nature, making it a form of thought itself. In Hanover, two of the four works, Soft Machine:
The Return, can be seen: Rianto's dances deal with the search for love, gender norms and tradition in Indonesia, while Yuya Tsukahara from contact Gonzo, known for her improvisational style in which punches and thrusts push the boundaries of the dance.
between violence and trust as the digital „metahuman“ returns. Nadia Beugré, who is one of the most influential choreographers of her generation, in which she explores artistic and social boundaries between Africa and Europe.
returns in Epique ! (pour Yikakou), she returns to her childhood, to the long overgrown village of Yikakou, and tells of what remains of a place that has long since disappeared, using the female figures that shaped her and accompanied by music. The foyer of Ballhof 1 is transformed into a parcours by a takeover of theacid collège, inviting visitors to daily sessions to practise survival in an increasingly corrosive present.
Finally, the grand Brujas finale will take place in the New Town Hall, where Lord Mayor Belit Onay will open Hanover's first No Boundaries Dance Battle. The Brujas are a collective of eight women who renegotiate the politics of battling where urban policy is made. Everyone can take part in the battle - active or spectator, with or without disabilities, beginners and advanced dancers, open to all dance styles.
In addition, the video dance Sarkha by artist Jumana Dabis will be shown, which takes us on an abstract journey through the lives of Palestinian artists, women and girls in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Cairo. Tiago Manquinho and Yanel Barbeito invite us to a showing and feedback discussion of their latest work on the Cumberland stage and two workshops also offer the opportunity to participate in a participatory way.
to take part in the Real Dance Festival.
