Hanover's historic promenade with flair

Am Hohen Ufer is one of the most important places in Hanover - both historically and culturally. It was here, on the eastern bank of the Leine, that the settlement of the city began in the 11th century. Today, the riverside promenade combines history, art and gastronomy to create a unique experience.

Historical significance of the High Bank

The name "Hanover" is probably derived from "honovere", which means "on the high bank". In the Middle Ages, this place was an important trading centre. The steep banks were formed by embankments from the demolition of Lauenrode Castle in the 16th century. The Begin Tower, a relic of the medieval town fortifications, still bears witness to this time.

Art and culture along the Leine

A walk along the High Bank takes you past the famous Nanas by Niki de Saint Phalle. These colourful sculptures are part of the Sculpture Mile and are among the city's best-known works of art. At the same time, the Historical Museum on the Hohe Ufer offers insights into the city's history.

Culinary delights and markets

The promenade is lined with cafés and restaurants that invite you to linger. The Old Town flea market, the oldest of its kind in Germany, takes place here every Saturday. Visitors can browse, haggle and enjoy the special flair.

Events and leisure

The Hohe Ufer is not only a centre of attraction during the day. Events such as the Fête de la Musique or the Christmas market take place here regularly.
A special highlight on the Hohe Ufer is the Leinewelle - an artificially created standing wave in the River Leine. This is where surfers from Hanover and the surrounding area meet to surf in the middle of the city centre, making Hanover's old town attractive not only for culture lovers but also for sports enthusiasts. It symbolises the combination of urban space and leisure activities.

Arrival and location

The Hohe Ufer is located in the centre of Hanover's old town and is within easy walking distance of the Kröpcke. The underground station "Markthalle/Landtag" is in the immediate vicinity
