What began as a kitchen garden in the 17th century is now a globally recognised showcase for plant culture. Tropical plants from Africa, South America and Asia thrive in the greenhouses - from brightly coloured orchids to exotic cacti.
Around 11,000 different plant species make the Herrenhausen Mountain Garden into a living archive of botanical treasures. Special themed areas such as the desert house, the rainforest pavilion or the historic palm house invite visitors to view nature from new perspectives.
One of the most powerful experiences in the Berggarten all year round is the orchid house - with one of the largest collections in Europe. Seasonal flower arrangements, flowering perennial beds and impressive groups of shrubs emphasise the high level of garden art for which Herrenhausen is renowned.
In addition to classic plant species, rare specimens threatened with extinction can also be found here. This makes the garden not only aesthetically valuable, but also an important place for nature conservation.
