Hanover's Kröpcke is the beating heart of the state capital of Lower Saxony. As the city's most central square and an important transport hub, it combines history, culture and modern city life.
Kröpcke was created in the 19th century as a square-like intersection in Hanover's pedestrian zone. It was named after Wilhelm Kröpcke, who took over the café located there in 1885 and gave it his name. The café quickly developed into a popular meeting place for Hanoverians and visitors.
A striking landmark of the square is the Kröpcke clock, which was erected in 1885. It originally served as a weather station and was financed by donations from citizens. Today it is a popular meeting place and houses changing art exhibitions.
In October 2015, an impressive light sculpture was installed above the Kröpcke. The three metre wide, shimmering golden sculpture hangs at a height of around 15 metres and is illuminated by 64 LED lights. It gives the square a unique ambience, especially in the evening hours.
The largest station of the Hanover city railway is located under the Kröpcke. Several lines intersect here, making the square a central transport hub. Its central location and easy accessibility make the Kröpcke an ideal starting point for exploring the city.
One of Germany's most popular shopping areas stretches around the Kröpcke. Bahnhofstraße and Georgstraße offer a variety of shops, boutiques and department stores. The Niki-de-Saint-Phalle-Promenade, an underground shopping arcade, completes the offer and invites you to go shopping regardless of the weather.
There are numerous cultural institutions in the immediate vicinity of the Kröpcke. The Hanover Opera House, built in the style of late classicism, offers a varied programme of opera, ballet and concerts. The GOP Variety Theatre and various museums are also within walking distance.
The gastronomic scene around the Kröpcke is as diverse as it is international. From traditional cafés to modern restaurants and street food stalls - there is something to suit every palate. The Café am Kröpcke in particular, which looks back on a long history, invites you to linger.
The Kröpcke is a regular venue for events and happenings. Whether Christmas market, street artists or cultural festivals - the square is alive with variety and attracts visitors from near and far.
