Museum August Kestner

The Museum August Kestner is an art and cultural centre and the oldest municipal museum in the state capital of Hanover. Almost the entire entrance façade of the original first museum building from 1889 is still preserved today. The museum is located in the city centre next to the New Town Hall and is the only museum in Hanover and the surrounding area to exhibit applied art dating back 6,000 years.

The Augusut Kestner Museum was named after August Kestner, a collector and patron of the arts who amassed an impressive collection of antique artworks. A total of four collection areas are presented here: Ancient and Egyptian civilisations, applied arts with a design collection and one of the largest collections of coins and medals in northern Germany.

To promote understanding and appreciation of the works of art, the museum offers guided tours, lectures and workshops where visitors can expand their knowledge and exchange ideas with experts.
