Timeless elegance in the heart of the city

The Opernplatz in Hanover combines classical architecture, cultural diversity and urban life. As a central meeting point, it offers an impressive backdrop for events and invites you to linger.

Historical development of the Opernplatz

Opernplatz was designed in the 19th century by court architect Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves as an isosceles triangle. It is located in the Mitte district and borders on Georgstraße, one of Hanover's main arteries. The square was named after the neighbouring opera house, which was built between 1845 and 1852 in the late neoclassical style. The opera house was badly damaged during the Second World War, but was faithfully rebuilt in the 1950s. Today it seats around 1,200 people and is the most important venue of the Hanover State Opera.

Architectural highlights

Opernplatz is characterised by its clear structure and harmonious integration into the cityscape. The redesign between 2008 and 2013 under the direction of landscape architect Kamel Louafi gave the square a new look. Sandstone promenades, hedges and lawns were used to create a green oasis that frames the classicist opera house. There is an underground car park beneath the square, which provides a traffic-free zone and makes it a more pleasant place to spend time.

Cultural significance and events

Opernplatz is a lively venue for cultural events. Open-air concerts, festivals and other events take place here regularly. A particular highlight is the annual Opern.Platz.Fest, which is organised as part of the Kulturdreieck festival weeks. The square is transformed into a large stage for music, dance and theatre.

Opernplatz is also a popular meeting place for demonstrations and rallies, such as Christopher Street Day (CSD), which attracts numerous visitors every year.

Memorial to the victims of National Socialism

Since 9 October 1994, a memorial on Opernplatz has commemorated the Jewish victims of National Socialism from Hanover. The memorial, designed by Michelangelo Pistoletto, consists of a walk-in pyramid with a stylised gate in the middle. It was erected on the initiative of the "Memoriam" association and bears the names of over 6,800 murdered Jews.

Opera Square as part of city life

Opernplatz is not only a place of culture and history, but also a popular meeting place for locals and tourists. Whether you want to relax, take a walk or go shopping, the square has something for everyone. There are numerous cafés, restaurants and shops in the immediate vicinity that invite you to linger.
