The Sonnensee in the north-east of Hanover is a 16-hectare quarry pond in the Misburg district. It is nestled in the Altwarmbüchener Moor / Ahltener Wald nature reserve and is part of an association-owned sports and leisure facility run by the Bund für Familiensport und freie Lebensgestaltung e.V. (BffL) .
The facility offers members and their guests access to a wide range of facilities, including catering, sauna, sanitary facilities and bicycle hire. Sports activities such as table tennis, petanque, ring tennis, giant chess, beach volleyball and a fitness trail are available. There is a varied playground for children near the beach. The lake is ideal for water activities such as stand-up paddling, swimming and diving .
The water quality of the Sonnensee is regularly checked by the health department of the Hannover Region. Samples are taken monthly during the bathing season from 15 May to 15 September. The results show consistently low levels of Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci, indicating excellent water quality .
The Sonnensee was created in 1962 by gravel extraction during the construction of the Hannover-Ost motorway junction. Since then, the site has developed into a centre for nature-loving family sports. The plant is operated entirely with natural electricity from hydropower and places great value on environmentally conscious behaviour.
