The Sprengel Museum is one of the most important institutions for 20th and 21st century art in Germany. Located in the direct neighbourhood of the Maschsee lake, it presents an extensive spectrum of artistic positions that trace the development of modern art. With a permanently maintained collection and a clear museum line, the museum stands for continuity, quality and education.
The museum is named after the Hanoverian chocolate manufacturer Bernhard Sprengel, who donated his extensive private collection to the city of Hanover in 1969. This donation was the starting point for the construction of the museum, which opened in 1979. Since then, the building has been continuously expanded - both in terms of construction and content.
The Sprengel Museum building was realised in several stages and combines functional museum architecture with sculptural elements. Large window fronts with a view of the Maschsee, light-flooded gallery spaces and an extensive sculpture garden characterise the appearance. The latest extension was opened in 2015 and blends harmoniously into the existing ensemble.
The location directly on the Maschsee combines urban life with cultural diversity and creates an attractive environment for a visit to the museum.
The Sprengel Museum manages one of the most important collections of 20th century art in Germany. It specialises in German Expressionism, Dadaism, Classical Modernism and art after 1945, with works by artists such as Max Ernst, Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso, Kurt Schwitters and Niki de Saint Phalle on permanent display.
A particularly unique feature is the world's largest publicly accessible collection of works by Schwitters, who is closely associated with Hanover. There is also an extensive graphic collection with drawings, photographs and prints.
The Sprengel Museum sees itself not only as an exhibition venue, but also as an educational institution. It offers an extensive educational programme for adults, ranging from guided tours and lectures to themed workshops. Co-operations with universities, cultural institutions and research partners support academic exchange and in-depth exploration of the collection.
The museum's educational programme is specifically geared towards different target groups and promotes active engagement with art in a social context.
The museum has a modern foyer with information area, cloakrooms, museum shop and café. All exhibition areas are barrier-free. Public transport links and parking facilities in the immediate vicinity ensure a comfortable journey.
A sculpture garden by the Maschsee also invites visitors to view selected works outside regular opening hours.
The Sprengel Museum is a mainstay of Hanover's cultural life. With its collection profile, educational standards and architectural quality, it offers a permanently relevant programme for visitors interested in art
