The Theater am Aegi is a venue with a long tradition in Hanover. Since the 1950s, Christmas fairy tales, musicals and cabaret performances, boulevard comedies, sophisticated Opera-dance and theatre performances or concerts.
Renowned national and international artists come and go here. The theatre, affectionately known as the "Aegi" by the people of Hanover, also hosts gala events, congresses, trade fairs and company parties.
The theatre was opened in 1953 as a modern first-run cinema with a stage for artistic and musical performances. Architects Hans Klüppelberg and Gerd Lichtenhahn designed the building in the style of post-war modernism. With a capacity of 1,453 seats, it was the largest cinema in northern Germany at the time. A major fire in 1964 largely destroyed the building, but it was reopened as a theatre in 1967. Since 1994, the Theater am Aegi has been run as a privatised guest theatre.
The Theater am Aegi has a large auditorium with 1,110 seats spread over three levels. The stage is equipped with modern technology and is suitable for a variety of productions. The foyer offers space for receptions and breaks.
The Theater am Aegi offers an extensive programme of guest performances and events, including concerts, guest performances, musicals, operettas, operas, ballet and dance productions, comedy, variety shows as well as congresses and corporate events. An average of 200,000 guests attend the numerous events every year.
The theatre is accessible at ground level and has a wheelchair box on the ground floor of the auditorium. A service hotline is available for questions and booking requests for wheelchair spaces.
