The landmark in the heart of the old town
Built in the 14th century, it is the oldest church in Hanover's old town and, with a church tower 97 metres high, is a glittering highlight among Hanover's sights.
The Marktkirche is the southernmost Rennomier piece of North German Gothic architecture and was not actually built as planned.
For financial reasons, construction of the tower had to be halted almost 650 years ago, so that a shortened spire was added, which adorned the tower of the Marktkirche until the church was destroyed in the Second World War.
In 1952, the Marktkirche was rebuilt in the historic brick Gothic style.
Even today, the Protestant-Lutheran market church of St. Georgii et Jacobi stands for the faith and culture of many Hanoverians.
