Both rivers not only characterise the cityscape, but also fulfil a central function in flood management. The Schnelle Graben, for example, diverts water in a targeted manner and thus protects the city centre from flooding.

The water quality of both rivers has improved considerably in recent decades. The Leine is now regularly categorised as quality class II, which is considered to be moderately polluted. The Ihme is also benefiting from these developments. Water sports are possible in both watercourses, subject to local regulations.

Water sports on the Ihme and Leine - Stand-up paddling (SUP)

Stand-up paddling is one of the most popular water sports in Hanover. It combines physical training with a change of perspective on the urban landscape. The calm sections of the Ihme and Leine rivers are ideal for beginners. Safe swimming is a prerequisite. Various providers in Hanover offer board hire as well as group tours.

Canoe tours and paddling

Canoe tours offer a mixture of urban experience and nature observation. Routes from the Maschsee via the Ihme to the lock in Limmer are particularly popular. These routes are suitable for both groups and individuals. In addition to the appropriate equipment, many providers also provide practical information on entry and exit points.

Rowing with tradition

Rowing has a long tradition in Hanover. The rivers offer ideal training conditions for rowing clubs. In addition, there are university sports programmes that make rowing accessible as a popular sport. Both recreational and competitive sports have their place on the waters.

River surfing on the Leinewelle

A special attraction is the Leinewelle - an artificially created, stationary wave in the course of the river Leine. This is where technology and trend sport meet. The controllable wave height makes river surfing suitable for different levels of experience. This project shows how urban space and modern sports concepts can be combined.

Water quality and safety

The use of the Ihme and Leine for sporting activities requires a minimum level of water quality. Both rivers are regularly analysed. For water sports without direct physical contact such as rowing or SUP, the current classification is considered safe. Nevertheless, attention should be paid to seasonal fluctuations and caution should be exercised during heavy rainfall events.

Service and providers in Hanover

Hanover offers a good infrastructure for water sports. There are a large number of hire centres that provide equipment. There are also numerous clubs and organisations that facilitate access to sporting activities on the water. The offer is complemented by courses and guided tours.

Travelling by boat on the Leine, Ihme or Mittelland Canal

Ihme Schifffahrt Hannover - Whether adventure cruises such as canal coffee cruises, historic lock cruises, Spanish evenings, firework cruises with buffet or charter cruises.
