The Hanover State Opera is one of the most important cultural institutions in Lower Saxony. As part of the Niedersächsische Staatstheater Hannover GmbH, it unites the opera, ballet and concert divisions under one roof. With a diverse repertoire ranging from classical operas to contemporary music theatre and ballet performances, the State Opera offers a broad spectrum of cultural experiences. The Niedersächsisches Staatsorchester Hannover, one of the oldest orchestras in Germany, provides the musical accompaniment to the productions.
The opera house was built between 1845 and 1852 according to the plans of the court architect Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves in the late neoclassical style. It replaced the previously used palace theatre, which no longer met the requirements. During the Second World War, the building was destroyed in an air raid in 1943 and rebuilt true to the original until 1950. Extensive modernisation work was carried out in 1985 and from 1996 to 1998, in particular to improve the acoustics and stage technology.
The State Opera is located at Opernplatz 1, 30159 Hanover, in the immediate vicinity of Georgstraße. It is easily accessible by public transport, for example via the "Kröpcke" light rail station. The opera house has a capacity of around 1,200 seats and offers a modern infrastructure for visitors.
The Hanover State Opera combines historical architecture with a diverse cultural programme. As one of the largest ensemble theatres in Germany, it offers a wide range of opera, ballet and concert performances. With its central location and modern facilities, it is an important centre of attraction for those interested in culture
