The opera house on Georgstraße is one of Hannover's most beautiful buildings. The Hanover State Opera was built between 1845 and 1852 to a design by court architect Georg Friedrich Laves. It initially served as the royal court theatre, as the palace theatre had become too small for the king. The late classicist building with its two large side wings has a porch facing Georgstraße on which effigies of poets and composers carved in stone cavort.
The opera and state orchestra's repertoire includes works from the Baroque to the present in outstanding presentation.
