The Schauspielhaus was opened in 1992. Before that, the smaller Ballhof Eins in the Hanoverian Old town the first venue, but due to its size and equipment it did not offer as many possibilities for productions. The imposing new building on Prinzenstraße is made of reinforced concrete and clad in white lacquered aluminium panels. It offers space for 630 spectators in the tiers and stalls.
Together with the Hanover State Opera, the Schauspielhaus forms the Niedersächsische Staatstheater Hannover GmbH.
